Port Coquitlam is a charming and dynamic city nestled in the heart of the Fraser Valley, just 27 kilometers east of Vancouver. The city has a rich history dating back thousands of years, with evidence of First Nations settlements dating back over 4,000 years.

Today, Port Coquitlam is a thriving community of over 60,000 residents, known for its picturesque parks, vibrant arts and culture scene, and family-friendly amenities.

Brad West was first elected Mayor in 2018, receiving the most votes ever by a municipal candidate in the city’s history. In 2022, Brad was the first Mayor in Port Coquitlam to be acclaimed to another term in office.

Prior to his time as Mayor, Brad served three terms as a City Councillor. He is widely recognized for his strong, common sense leadership, his focus on what matters to Port Coquitlam families, and his ability to get things done.​

Brad is a graduate of the University of Victoria, St. Francis Xavier University and completed a program in Leadership at Harvard University.

  • The area now known as Port Coquitlam was traditionally inhabited by the Kwikwetlem First Nation for thousands of years before the arrival of European explorers.

  • Simon Fraser, a Scottish explorer, was the first European to enter the region in 1808. He named the river in the area "Coquitlam", derived from a Coast Salish word meaning "small red salmon".

  • In 1858, the discovery of gold in the Fraser River led to an influx of European settlers to the area.

How to Get to Port Coquitlam

The city is easily accessible by car, bus, and train. If you're driving, take Highway 1 east from Vancouver, or head west on the Trans-Canada Highway if you're coming from the Fraser Valley or other parts of Canada.

 

If you prefer to take public transportation, you can take the West Coast Express commuter train, which runs from Mission to Vancouver, with stops in Port Coquitlam. The city is also served by several bus routes that connect it to other parts of the Lower Mainland.

  • Port Coquitlam is easily accessible by car via the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) or the Lougheed Highway (Highway 7).

  • There are also several major roads that connect Port Coquitlam to neighboring cities, including Coquitlam, Pitt Meadows, and Maple Ridge.
